Make money with Text Link Ads
This is a check from TLA I’ve received. I make money from TLA because a couple of my websites get good traffic and have good ranking. Anyone can sign up for TLA and provided they approve your site you can begin making money from your site. The better ranking and/or traffic you have the more you stand to make.
Making money with Adsense
This is one of the smaller Google Adsense checks I’ve received. I love getting these in the mail every month!
My 12 month goal is to increase my internet earnings from $500 to $1,000 each month. This would be done by:
- increasing my adsense earnings to $500 per month (via SEO that I’m doing right now)
- i already make $200 from Text Link Ads
- i’m working on a plan to make $300 from selling banners on a few of my sites
Make money with no money for beginners
So, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how the average person can get started making money online. So I tried to look at things from a beginner’s standpoint, and I did a few different searches of Google and found that the majority of the results were for sites that were trying to get you to buy stuff to “teach” you how to make money online.
Truthfully, this made me sad. While it does require hard work and some persistence, one of the biggest draws to the internet opportunities is the simple fact that it shouldn’t require a huge initial investment to get started… or any at all.
The tools are out there, they are often just hidden amidst the sites that are trying to profit on people who are trying to get started.
For example, Blogger (www.blogger.com) not only will host your blog for free, it’s a quick and easy set-up that also helps you link in Google Adsense so you can get started earning a little income from your work. Then you just have to do good consistent writing on a topic that interests you. Stick with it, promote your work, and you can see solid gains. You certainly won’t make a fortune over night, but you can’t build a house without a solid foundation.
The tools are there to make money online. We’re here to help you plow through the other nonsense.
Condition affects ROI
So here is a little something for you all to think about as you decide what niche you are going to carve out for yourself in the internet marketplace. It’s one of the most basic principles of economics, yet it truly cannot be over valued…
Condition!
Obviously, depending on the field you get into, condition isn’t really an issue. I’ve, personally, had a ton of experience in fields where condition not only drives prices, it more or less dictates them.
Having a huge interest in the field of antique books and collectible sports cards, I’ve seen how condition can be one of the single most important features in the value of a product. The sports cards industry now has multiple grading services where you pay to have your cards graded, professionally, and this grade can greatly impact the value of the product you’re looking to sell. It’s the same with books. Anyone can find a poor condition copy of a valued first edition for next to nothing. Try to find that very same book, first edition, with a pristine dust jacket and crisp clean pages. The price is often astronomically higher.
Obviously, if you’re looking to sell cell phone cases or something else that you buy new directly from the manufacturer, condition does not play as important a role, as new is always just about the best condition. But if you are looking to bust into a marketplace where the word “collectible” or “used” is involved, teach yourself now to never underestimate the power of condition to drive price. It can be the most valuable lesson you ever learn.
Make money with no money
This post is not about how to become a millionaire. I don’t know how to do this because I’m not a millionaire. I am however making about $500 per month from the internet.
This post is about making “some” money by spending NO money. The best way “I” personally have found to make money without spending any money is by blogging. All you need to be successful at blogging is identifying some topic that interests you AND a bit of time every few days. With blogging it is a good idea to do a new posting every few days.
Step 1: Identify a topic that really interests you. The topic you choose can be about 4-wheeler riding, horses, efficient ways to clean a house, cars, computers, etc. Literally anything.
Step 2: Go to http://en.wordpress.com/signup/ and sign up for a free Wordpress account.
Step 3: Create a post every few days.
Step 4: Once you have a post created let Google, Bing and Yahoo know about your site. This will bring visitors who are your way to make money. Do this for free by clicking this link.
Step 5: Create a Google Adsense account. Google Adsense automatically puts advertisements on your Wordpress blog. It’s free to create an Adsense account.
Step 6: Keep adding new posts every few days.
The above is a simple high-level process that will get you making money with no money.
See the money I’ve made with Google Adsense:
Making money online buying Established Websites
Making money buying established websites
In my last posting I talked about a website that has consistently made me $200/month for the past three years with little effort on my part. In fact this website works so well I ended up buying another website off the same person. This new site makes me about $30 to $50 per month for the past two years. You can see this in the image below. This particular website earned me $31.06 in July 2009. This doesn’t count the money I made from Paypal for the car listings.
Both of my sites offer car listings. One is for mopars (dodge, chrysler, plymouth) and the other is for imports (hondas, toyotas, etc.)
I do not necessarily recommend buying websites from other people because of all the scammers out there. My lesson through dealing with all these scammers selling “established websites” is to do a gotomeeting or webex to ensure they are not using Photoshop to alter their earnings.
Like I’ve said before – Don’t settle for screenshots.
Success buying an Established Website
Over three years ago I purchased an established website from a great guy in Arizona. He does SEO work for a living. I purchased the site for $2200 and it has made me $200 per month from Adsense for the past three years without me doing anything.
For those of you still learning Adsense is a way to easily show advertisements on your website. When visitors to your website click on one of these ads you earn money. Depending on the link you can earn a few cents to a few dollars. Adsense can be a great way to make money online.
The website I purchased from him is great because users add their own content (car listings). I haven’t barely done anything to the site in three years. I’ve turned my $2,200 investment into a profit of $7,200 from this single website.
I am not a fan of buying websites from other people because of all the scammers out there. However as I’ve said in previous posts – you need to talk to the person over the phone, via video conference or even better in person. Do not buy a website and only talk to the person via IM. I know I’m going to get comments from people saying they’ve made money buying an established website and they only traded emails with the seller. That is the exception. Trust me I’ve had more people try to scam me than I can remember.
In fact this website works so well I ended up buying another website off the same person. I’ll write about that at another time.
End result – If you do your homework, talk with the person you can find some very good established websites out there that will make you money. Another thing to think about is to do a gotomeeting or webex with the seller so you can actually watch them go to their Adsense or Paypal earnings page so you can be sure they are not sending you fake screenshots of traffic and earnings.
Its your money so make them show you live. Don’t settle for screenshots.
The Why factor (make money online)
I get a ton of questions from friends and family about why I chose to use the internet for my pursuit of the American Dream. Why don’t I open my own record store, or my own bookstore, or even my own advertising company?
The truth is, there are plenty of reasons.
I enjoy the hours that the internet affords me. The internet is a true global market place. There is no 8-5, although treating my pursuits as a job as far as devoting the needed amounts of time definitely has paid dividends. Simply put, the internet market doesn’t allow you to get rich doing just 15 minutes worth of work a day. You still have to put in the time if you want to benefit.
The internet makes financial sense. It helps keep my costs low. I don’t have to pay rent on a brick and mortar store. I don’t have to hire people to make sure that my store is always staffed. Instead of being limited to the number of people in my town at any one time, I can be attracting customers from around the entire globe.
I like the freedom, and I’m not just talking about the flexible hours. I can turn my music up as loud as I like. If I don’t feel like shaving for a few days I don’t have to worry that the next customer though the door may find my 5 day growth to be unprofessional.
Ask yourself, why do you want to make money online? Even more importantly, are you willing to put in the work?
My Worst Money Making Ideas #5
#5 – Purchased a website
Summary: I purchased an established website from flippa.com which was supposed to make an average income of $200 per month. The site hardly made any money. The prick liar who sold it to me was full of it. I’m protecting the domain name of this website as I don’t want to give it a bad name.
Why this idea sucked: Because of a–holes out there who claim their websites make money when they hardly make a cent. They create fake screenshots of traffic, paypal, adsense earnings, etc.
What I gained: First was the knowledge to never buy a website without first talking to the person on the phone. None of this IM and email bullsh-t. Second to never buy a website without conducting a webex session with the person where they can control their screen and actually log into Paypal and Adsense to show you the earnings. Trust me with this. If they don’t want to do it do not buy the site. You’ve been warned. (I actually think an auction site, similar to flippa, that offered this type of verification would be a great startup for someone out there. This would prove the site was actually making money)
What I spent:$1,100
Passion
So here’s a little lesson I learned the very hard way in my adventures.
While it is important that you have some interest in whatever venture you are making into the internet market place, you must be careful to maintain enough distance to stay focused and rational when you’re making financial decisions.
I’m a gigantic Pearl Jam fan. I’ll travel the globe for a show, and not think twice about it. I’ve spent more money on framing the posters that hang in my home than the average person spends on their Widescreen TV. Simply put, everything Pearl Jam is interesting to me, and I thought that excitement could drive me to make profits.
Here’s where the lesson comes in. It didn’t work. I would buy a sought after poster with intent to resell it, but I couldn’t bring myself to start the auction. Or I’d see a fellow fan was searching for a particular poster from their very first show and I’d end up selling them the one I had for a substantial loss, because in my mind everyone should be able to proudly hang that memory upon their walls.
I’ve heard stories like this from people in many fields. A bookseller friend of mine said the day he started making a profit was the day he realized he had to find pleasure in placing a treasured copy in a good home… that was no longer his. A sports card dealer from when I was a child told me that he spent nearly every penny he made in his store on furthering his own collection, and closed the doors on his brick and mortar store not 6 months after he opened.
So, by all means, be excited by whatever path you decide to take in the world of internet commerce.
Just don’t choose something that you’re too passionate about.
